Research Request Form, Policy and Fees:

The Salem Historical Society is not a collecting organization and therefore does not hold its own archives and manuscripts or object-based collections. However, SHS does have relationships with numerous dedicated local historians who have experience researching the many aspects of Salem’s history. The wealth and diversity of the area’s research institutions can inform and enrich your research projects.

The Society can provide historical or genealogical research services for individuals unable to visit the area in person.

There will be a small research fee for requests that require long and detailed searches at local institutions.
The Society reserves the right to determine which requests will require a minimum fee.

The initial fee is $25.00 per hour to cover the cost of time and travel and a payment of one hour is required in advance. You will be notified by the researcher after the first hour if additional time will be required to fulfill your request. Requests are handled in the order in which they are received. Members receive a 25% discount on research fees.

Please submit this form outlining your request. Once the researcher has determine the length of time required a credit card payment can be made by accessing the DONATIONS page, under the SUPPORT tab.
